Translation & Interpretation
VETC IVQ in translation and interpretation Level 5 is appropriate for translation practitioners who would like to further develop their skills or to acquire a recognized qualification in this specialized field.

The training is aimed:

  • to introduce students to the principles of translation
  • to expose students to a wide range of texts which are analyzed and translated to a professional standard of quality
  • to sensitize students to special problems of translation (e.g. terminology) and familiarize them with standard methods of dealing with them

Principles and Practice of General Translation

VETC IVQ in Translation & Interpretation Level 5 provides insight into the nature of problems of translation. Particular attention is placed on the practice of translation: students are assigned a number of authentic texts (i.e. published in quality American and British press, magazines, journals, etc.). The students translate their texts and the translations are discussed and analyzed in class. Students will acquire a general (both practical and theoretical) understanding of the process of translation as an intellectual as well as a professional activity. Topics for discussion include: a) analysis of Source language text (intention, readership, setting, register); b) literal translation and paraphrase; c) transfer errors; d) cultural context; e) jargon, slang, etc.

General and Specialized Translation

Students in this course will be assigned particularly demanding texts of General and Semi-specialized Context within the following broad subject areas: Technology, Business, Literature, Science, Social Science and Law. Students are expected to consider translation from a professional's point of view, while particular emphasis is placed on theoretical issues and the application of theoretical principles to practice.
